They sound similar. They’re built for different things, and most people are better off with one of them and not both.
What a plan is
A monthly fee paid to the practice that covers your routine care — check-ups, hygiene, x-rays — and discounts treatment. No claims, no excess, no forms.
What insurance is
A policy that reimburses part of what you pay, after a claim. Good for the unexpected big bill; usually poor value for routine care once you add the excess.
A typical year
Two check-ups, two hygiene visits and x-rays cost £330 pay-as-you-go. Complete costs £299.88 a year and includes them, plus 15% off anything else. Insurance for the same person is around £240 a year with a £50 excess per claim.
Our honest view
If you’re mostly routine, a plan. If you’re planning implants next year, neither saves you much — ask about 0% finance instead.
